Financial Literacy Guide

For Immigrant Families in Connecticut

Bridges 2 Business was founded to close the financial knowledge gap that too many immigrant families face. This guide covers the five most important areas of personal finance — banking, credit, housing, taxes, and small business — in plain language. Whether you are opening your very first US bank account or preparing to apply for a mortgage, this guide is your starting point.

Opening a bank account in the United States is the first step toward financial stability for any immigrant family. A checking account lets you deposit paychecks, pay bills, and avoid costly check-cashing fees. Look for banks or credit unions that accept ITINs if you do not yet have a Social Security Number.

Tip:Many community banks in Connecticut, including several credit unions in Bridgeport and Hartford, offer 'second-chance' accounts specifically designed for newcomers.
Did You Know?:Check-cashing stores charge 1–3% per check. A free bank account can save you $300–$500 per year on check-cashing fees alone.
